Of Norman foundation, St Oswald’s Church belonged, in Medieval times, to the Abbey of St. Peter in Gloucester, as did Shipton Manor, and the patronage of the church still resides with the Bishop of Gloucester. The manor passed into the hands of the Oliffe (Olave) family who retained it until the late 17th century and the larger part of Shipton village still bears their name.
Traces of the Norman origin are to be seen in the masonry of the north wall with evidence of a doorway mirroring the current door on the south side of the church. The church was extended in the 13th century including the addition of the South Chapel. Faded remains of wall paintings can bee seen on both the interior of the north wall and the chancel arch.
St Oswald’s position in the centre of the village provides a beautiful and historic focus on Christian witness in the community. Regular prayer and worship in the church, as well as baptisms, weddings and funerals, bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ into the heart of village life.
